There's a game on Steam that's been surging in popularity in recent days. Crab Game was released on Steam in late-October, and in less than a month, has almost 100,000 reviews, which are generally very positive. It's also surpassed a peak of over 50,000 concurrent players. But what is Crab Game, and is there a Crab Game PS4version? We'll tell you what you need to know, so you can get your claws into this one.
Is Crab Game On PS4?
At the time of writing, Crab Game is not available on PS4. There are a variety of other animal-based games, but Crabs are seemingly an overlooked sub-genre of the PS4 market at this time. If you see anything online claiming to be a PS4 version of Crab Game, do not be fooled. At best, it will be a cheap imitation. At worst, it will be somethnig malicious. If it looks like a crab, scuttles like a crab, but sounds like a duck, don't trust it.
Given the short time since the game was made, this is perhaps understandable. But is there anything in the pipeline regarding a Crab Game PS4 edition?
Crab Game PS4 Release Date
There are no confirmed plans as yet for a Crab Game PS4 version. At the moment Crab Game is available on Steam and can be played on Windows, macOS and SteamOS + Linux.
There are plenty of reasons why a game like this may not be coming to PS4. Firstly is the different development requirements of the various platforms. Crab Game is developed by a one-person team, and the developer known as Dani may not have the time or resources to be able to adapt the game for the PlayStation. Dani has certainly been busy lately providing updates to the game on Steam.
And there are also questions about how Sony might feel in terms of associating its brand with a game that may, just possibly, have been inspired by a certain South-Korean TV smash. We don't know what the legalities might be. But that's a minefield someone else can negotiate.
What Is Crab Game?
Crab Game is described on Steam as "a First-Person Multiplayer game where you fight for the ultimate cash price in different minigames based on children's games, until only one player is left to claim it all". If this sounds familiar, then you'd be quite wrong. The developer is at pains to point out that:
Definitely not based on any online streaming pop culture korean tv shows, as that would get me in legal trouble, so we're certainly not doing that.
And that's immediately obvious. Crabs and Squids have absolutely nothing in common apart from their preference for living in the sea. Having said which, there doesn't appear to be any actual crab-related content in the game. So if you're buying this game because of a particular fondness for decapod crustaceans, prepare for disappointment.
While the look and feel of the game are clearly inspired by a certain South Korean TV hit, the fact a developer was able to produce something that has gone down so well with players in just a couple of weeks, is still very impressive. But if you're a PS4 player who wants to have a go, sorry. No prizes for you.
